Graduate Student Opportunities

To all potential students with Dr. Herzing,

Thank you for your interest in our program. Dr. Herzing only takes a limited amount of students, usually in the acoustic and behavioral areas.  Students must have their own financial support or sign up for a TA ship through the Department of Biology at FAU.

If you have inquired or would like to inquire about studying under Dr. Herzing at Florida Atlantic University for either a Masters or PhD degree please do the following:

  1. Send an email to info@wilddolphinproject.org
  2. Subject Heading should read: Student inquiry – your last name
  3. Email should contain the following:
    • Letter of interest – be specific about what area of dolphins you are interested in and your skill set and experience
    • C.V. with school info, volunteer info, and GPA

If you are considered as a top candidate, we will then ask you to provide the following:

  • 3 letters of recommendation
  • Unofficial Transcripts

Dr. Herzing is only considering students with advanced acoustic, behavior, or genetic experience.   No students without a Master’s Degree will be considered for PhD work.

Did you Know

Spotted dolphin calves are unspotted and look like young bottlenose dolphins.

Spotted dolphins regurgitate hard, indigestible parts of their food, such as squid beaks and fish vertebrae.

As spotted dolphins grow up they learn how to behave from their mothers and also from siblings, peers, and elders in the society.

Juvenile spotted dolphins babysit younger spotteds.

As a spotted dolphin grows up, its role and responsibilities in the dolphin community change Sometimes spotted dolphins travel, forage for food, and socialize with bottlenose dolphins.

 

Atlantic spotted dolphins are relatively unstudied, compared to their pan-tropical cousins who have been slaughtered in the tuna nets.

Spotted dolphins use their signature whistles in many different ways, including initiating contact with other dolphins.

Spotted dolphins can be identified over long periods of time by spot patterns, by flukes, and by dorsal fins.
